Ausangate Trek Macchu Picchu

This tour is perfect for those seeking challenging high altitude trek with several high, and it is not intended for people with low fitness level. This is a quiet trek, with amazing views of glacial lakes, magnificent snow-capped peaks and unusual landscape of the Rainbow Mountains of Vinicuna.

Day 1: Arrive Cuzco

We will meet you at Cuzco airport and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Acclimatisation Day in Cuzco

The city of Cuzco is a perfect place for acclimatization before you start Ausangate trek.

Day 3: Cuzco – K’airahuiri Alto

We depart Cuzco early as we have a 4 hour drive to reach Hanchi Pacha, where we will meet our team of local horsemen. After lunch we will begin trekking, climbing for 2-3 hours to the village of K’airahuiri Bajo. We will then need another hour to reach the higher village – K’airahuiri Alto, where we will camp for the night.

Day 4: K’airahuiri Alto – Rainbow Mountain – Pucacocha

After early breakfast, our path leads through Vinicunca Pass, with the first glimpse of the famous Rainbow Mountains of Vinicuna. After the rest and time for taking photographs we continue our trek over two high passes– Menos Ponco and Chillca  – which will take around 5 hours. We will then descend to the campsite at Pucacocha Lake.

Day 5: Pucacocha – Palomani Pass – Q’ampa

Another day of spectacular views of glacial lakes and high mountains, and we may even come across herds of llamas and alpacas. We begin our trek today by ascending the Apacheta Pass, and from there climbing to our second pass, Palomani. From here we can see the Cordillera Vilcanota mountain range, as we descend from the pass into the wide green valley of Pampa Jutunpata and continue into the Rio Q’ampa Valley, where we will camp for the night.

Day 6: Q’ampa – Pacchanta

Today we reach the final pass of our trek, the Q’ampa Pass, and along the way we will pass several coloured lakes before pause for lunch on the shores of the Lake Q’omercocha. We continue to descend for several hours until we reach the Andean village of Pacchanta. We have plenty of free time to explore the village and can visit the hot springs to relax our stressed muscles.

Day 7: Pacchanta – Cuzco

This morning you will drive back to Cuzco where you will have free time to rest or explore the city.

Day 8: Depart Cuzco

We will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to Cuzco Airport for your departing flight.

  • Personal trekking insurance (must cover trekking to 4500m as a minimum. Some routes will go to higher altitudes)
  • Single tent and hotel occupancy costs an additional £180 / US$220 per person and must be requested at time of booking
  • Permit to climb Huayna Picchu is not included but can be booked separately
